The longer the wait between blog posts, the more news I have to report, so naturally this post is a bit of a doozy. But followers of my Tumblr might already know about the recent release of “Friends from Far Away vol. 1,” a compilation of travelogue comics by myself & Max Karl Key chronicling our couchsurfing trip of Europe last year. Our travel tumblr Made En Route is still updating now, and a second printed volume is on the way.
Next week Portland-area folks will have 2 exciting opportunities to check out “Friends from Far Away.” First of all we will present alongside some other great Portland zinesters at Print Fancy, a group zine release party at the venerable Reading Frenzy. This will be my first time delivering a presentation of my work since college, so it’s certain to be a barrel of laughs! The event takes place next Wednesday, July 9 at 7pm and offers refreshments.
But wait, there’s more… it’s time again for Portland Zine Symposium, and this year I’ll be more involved than ever. Check this out:
- Me & Max will be tabling with “Friends from Far Away,” “Trusty Companion” and “Creature Colors”
- I’m leading an all-ages workshop on character design for cartoons & comics (schedule TBA!)
- I’m participating in the Portland Zine Symposium Art Show at Floating World Comics, with an opening event Friday July 11 from 6-9pm
- In case you hadn’t noticed I did all of the promotional art for PZS this year, including the posters, t-shirts, stickers and buttons! The theme was “outer space” and as you can probably tell I had a lot of fun with it.
Feel free to share these around willy-nilly, it is promotional art after all! And if you didn’t know, Portland Zine Symposium is FREE, volunteer-organized, and takes place July 12-13 at the Ambridge Event Center. Stop by if you can and I’ll give you a high five for being awesome.
Of course if you can’t make it to these events, you can always purchase a copy of “Friends from Far Away” by contacting me directly – katy @ trumpetflower.net will do the trick. A mere $8 and we are happy to ship anywhere in the world. :)
